When I picked Shelby up from school yesterday afternoon, she was wearing a new necklace that hadn't been there when I dropped her off that morning. She was chatting nonchalantly about the day, but my inquiring mind wanted to know where she got the necklace. The interro, ahem, uh, conversation went like this:

Me:          "That's a nice necklace, where'd you get it?"

Shelby:        "One of my friends gave it to me."

M:               "Really? Which one?"

S:                "I don't remember."

M:               "You don't remember? Do you have so many friends giving you necklaces for your birthday you can't remember which one it was?"

S:                "No"

M:               "So who was it?"

S:                "I dunno."

M:               "A friend is nice enough to give you a necklace for your birthday, and you forget who it was? How shallow is that?"

M:               "You might as well tell me, you know I'm gonna find out one way or the other."

S:                 ---

M:               "Let's try to jog your memory a little. Was the friend a girl or a boy?"

S:                "OK, it was a boy."

M:               "Mmm-hmm.  What's the boy's name?"

S:                "I dunno"

M:               "So this friend who is a boy but whose name you can't remember gives you a necklace. You must not think he's a very good friend if you can't even remember his name."

S:                 ---

M:               "Let's run some names by you to see if any sound familiar.  Was is something like Miguel, or Carlos, or Michael, or Blake, or Jeremy...(Michael and Blake were the ones she danced with at the school dance a couple weeks ago.)

S:                 "OK, it was Blake."

M:                "Blake, huh?"

S:                 "Yeah, Blake. I guess we're officially classified at school as girlfriend and boyfriend."

M:                "So what classifies you as that?"

S:                 "We sit by each other at lunch, we talk at our lockers."

M:                "Have you exchanged phone numbers?"

S:                 "Yeah."

M:                "What else?"

S:                 "We sat next to each other at the movie that Bailey & I went to while you were out of town last weekend."

M:                "Was this a pre-planned thing, like a date?"

S:                 "NO! We were just both there at the same time."

M:                "Hmmm"

I still am not sure quite how I feel about it. I guess they're in 6th grade so it's kinda cute....Blake's dad is a lawyer here in town so I guess that parts OK. But you can bet that I'll be scrolling through the caller ID on the phone and monitoring any calls she gets and then disappears into her bedroom to talk. I guess this also explains the extra primping time in the morning and the sudden compulsion to wear nicer clothes to school than usual.

In other news, I called it here and yesterday, the xh broke it to Shelby that he in fact, would not be able to go with her class to the campout because his boss told him he couldn't give him time off after all. Don't know if I quite believe that one or not. Oh well, he will have to deal with it when she will no longer have anything to do with him because he constantly bailed on her. Whatever. So, anyway, I'm child-free tonight. Woo-hoo what's there to do on Thursday without a kid? I'll probably end up just doing the housework I haven't been able to get to all week. Maybe I'll call Blake's dad.

Isn't it funny how vague they try to be? Like we aren't seeing right thru them. It sounds very cute & innocent, though.

Every once in a blue moon I get a night at home alone. I usually wind up doing housework and playing game on the computer.

Wild & crazy, huh?
