Venturing into New Territory

Recently I met a guy that I have been talking on the phone with and emailing back & forth with. We've not gone on an official "date" yet, but are trying to work something out for this weekend. Last night when he called, Shelby grabbed the phone before I did and saw his name on caller ID. Of course, I hadn't told her about him since it's pretty early in the whole scheme of things and I don't really know what's going to develop from this - or not. After we got off the phone, she asked who he was so I then spent the next 30 minutes telling her about him, his kids, etc. She got a little upset at first, which I expected, but after I reassured her that no one was going to try to replace her dad in her life, she seemed to settle down. I hope I did the right thing by reaffirming her dad's place in her life and letting her know that I was ready to move on with my own. We shall see, I guess time will tell.

I think you handled it well. More than anything, I think she needs to know that YOU are not going anywhere. You are her rock, her only stability. While of course it is important for her to know that no one is going to try to repace her dad, my gut says she worries more about you getting involved with someone and not having time for her anymore.
